It may not be time to pack away those raincoats and jackets just yet, as more stormy weather is on the cards for this weekend.

A cut-off low over the south-western parts of the country is hitting the Western Cape this weekend. The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for disruptive rain over the Cape Winelands, City of Cape Town, Overberg and southern parts of the West Coast Districts on Sunday into Monday.

At this stage, an 80% chance of rain is predicted for Sunday, followed by isolated showers (30%) on Monday.

This will likely lead to localised flooding of settlements and roads, and damage to property and infrastructure. At the same time, a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds that could result in difficult driving conditions and localised damage to settlements. This will affect the following areas: the City of Cape Town, Cape Winelands, Overberg, Garden Route and Central Karoo municipalities on Sunday.

All of the City of Cape Town’s services will be ready and standing by to deal with any impacts. The municipality’s Disaster Risk Management spokesperson, Charlotte Powell has requested that the public heed the current advisory, and to put measures in place to safeguard their properties.

“This would include clearing out drainage systems and cleaning gutters, removing dead tree branches and other obstructions, and digging trenches around their homes to divert water away,” said Powell.

Residents are also urged to save the Public Emergency Communication Centre number in case of an emergency – 021 480 7700 or 107 if you are calling from a landline.
