Brazen criminals have struck again on Macassar’s so-called road of doom. On Saturday, on Macassar Road, three workers employed by a City of Cape Town contractor to work at the Zandvliet Waste Water plant were accosted by 10 armed men.
The staffers were then robbed of their cell phones and cash. The suspects also fled with a vehicle belonging to one of the victims. The suspects have yet to be arrested. Ward councillor Peter Helfrich says he feels aggrieved by the lack of police visibility in the area.

“I’m not going to sit back and act like everything is okay, because everything is not okay. This is not the Wild West. SAPS is duty-bound to protect our residents, and they must fulfil this duty,” says Helfrich.
Helfrich has previously alluded to the fact that the local SAPS is severely under-resourced.
“They must also stick to their promises. SAPS management in the province promised more visibility in the area, and particularly this road, after three bodies were recently found on this road. I am ticked off and outraged because this has not happened.” says Helfrich.
Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg is calling on the public for information:
“Macassar police registered an armed robbery case following an incident involving City of Cape Town workers in Macassar Road, Macassar on Saturday afternoon at about 13:25. According to reports armed suspects approached the workers robbed them of their cellular telephones and a VW Citi Golf and fled the scene. The suspects are yet to be arrested. Anyone with any information about this incident can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.” Says Twigg.
