Many homes flooded, aid arrives

The aid organization Gift of the Givers says many homes have been flooded following heavy rains.

Spokesperson Ali Sablay says they’ve been receiving calls from 4 o’clock this morning, as the heavy rain caused distress and havoc in communities.

“Communities from various parts of the Western Cape have been appealing for our assistance. Thousands of residents are affected. Many homes have been completed flooded.,” he added.

Gift of the Givers teams are currently deployed in the following hard-hit areas:

*Gugulethu
*KTC
*Nyanga
*Khayelitsha
*Langa
*Bishop Lavis
*Mitchell’s Plain
*Grabouw
*Chatsworth
*Atlantis
*Strand

He added, “We have been called by the Breede Valley Municipality, Theewaters Kloof Municipality and Saldanha Bay Disaster Management for our assistance. Many communities have been evacuated and placed in community halls,” he added.

Gift of the Givers is distributing blankets, warm clothing and hot meals.

In addition, he said their teams will be visiting more areas in the coming days.
