A major construction project is to commence in the Bellville area later this month. Predicted to run over 22 months, the City of Cape Town will commence with the dualling of Jip de Jager Drive. Thus, by December 2024, residents should be able to enjoy the new roads.
The CoCT’s Urban Mobility Directorate says is expected to “increase the road capacity and alleviate traffic congestion”. Residents are asked to use alternative routes as constructions continue.

What does the project entail?
The City budgeted approximately R77 million for the project. Its primary goal is to relieve traffic congestion along Jip de Jager Drive.
- Extension of pedestrian tunnel at Welgemoed Golf Course
- Upgrade existing signalised intersections
- Construct retaining walls adjacent to Kommandeur Street
- Dualling Jip de Jager Drive from Kommissaris Street to Van Riebeeckshof Road
- Construct walking and cycling lanes
“However, with a growing population and more developments in these areas, there is a dire need to add additional lanes to Jip de Jager Drive up to Riebeeckshof Road to accommodate the increase in traffic. This will go a long way in alleviating the traffic congestion in the morning and afternoon peak hour periods in particular,” say the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas.
Quintas also says that while the impact on road users should be limited – all road constructions come with a level of inconvenience, “best is to avoid this road as far as possible, and to anticipate delays when travelling along this section. Also, residents may experience some dust and noise pollution in the vicinity of the roadworks.”
“I want to thank all for their support during this time, and request road users to please comply with the signage and flag personnel’s instructions,” said Councillor Rob Quintas.
Jip de Jager is a major route that connect the northern suburbs of Durbanville and Bellville with the N1 freeway. At the moment, the road is a dual carriageway between the N1 and Kommissaris Street.
