ICYMI: City Moves to Paperless Billing – Residents Urged to Sign Up Before Deadline

Published on

The City of Cape Town is set to fully transition to paperless billing by the end of 2025, with all municipal accounts moving to email delivery.

This initiative, which has been in progress for several years, currently sees over 430,000 accounts delivered electronically.

However, from 1 January 2026, the City will cease sending printed bills via the South African Postal Service.

Residents who have not yet signed up for emailed bills are encouraged to do so before the 31 December 2025 deadline.

Those without access to email can contact the City’s Call Centre for assistance in ensuring they continue to receive their statements without disruption.

Councillor Siseko Mbandezi, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, emphasized the benefits of the move, highlighting improvements in efficiency, cost savings, and environmental sustainability.

“We’ve made significant progress in reducing our reliance on printed bills, and we are now taking the next step towards full digitalisation. Switching to emailed accounts is a simple process—customers need only send an email or SMS with their account number and email address. We urge all business and residential account holders to make the transition before the deadline,” said Mbandezi.

He added that those without email access will be accommodated. “It is crucial that residents who cannot receive email statements contact our Call Centre so we can assist them.”

The move to paperless billing is expected to mitigate risks associated with postal service delays and lost bills while providing a more efficient and user-friendly experience.

Emailed accounts offer several advantages, including easier tracking of payments, quicker access for proof of residence, and reduced environmental impact by cutting down on paper waste.

How to Register for Emailed Accounts

  • Send an email to Revenue.Eservices@capetown.gov.za with your account number and email address.
  • Alternatively, SMS your details to 31223.
  • Customers without email accounts should contact the City’s Call Centre at 0860 103 089 for assistance.

More information on registration and online services is available HERE.

The City says by making the switch, residents can enjoy improved efficiency, reduced errors, and cost savings while contributing to a more sustainable city. The City urges all account holders to act before the deadline to ensure a seamless transition to paperless billing.
