Experts believe that South Africa is already “unofficially” in a fifth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, although fewer people in the wave are likely to be infected by SARS-CoV-2. The National Institute of Communicable Diseases says more than 10 000 people were infected with the virus, within 24 hours on Tuesday and this was the first time since the 5th of January.

Meanwhile: The Western Cape is currently experiencing a surge in new infections, but hospitalizations, deaths and oxygen consumption remain low. Spokesperson for the Health Department, Mark van der Heever says the province is currently experiencing a surge in coronavirus cases. He says the numbers are approaching the peak, when compared statistically with previous waves.
