Local experts believe South Africa is on the cusp of a 5th wave. Since last Wednesday, there has been an increase in the number of cases, the positivity rate as well as hospitalizations, especially in Gauteng. Meanwhile, the provincial Department of Health and Wellness has appealed to residents to protect themselves ahead of a 5th wave — and to get their primary and booster shots. The Department says both vaccines, the Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson shots, are safe and effective. The National Department’s, Dr. Lesley Bamford says the goal remains to vaccinate 70% of the population.
