Citrusdal cop arrested and charged with murder

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has nabbed a Citrusdal Police officer on allegations of murder. 38-year-old sergeant Jasper Coetzee – who was attached to the West Coast Flying Squad – appeared in the Citrusdal Magistrates’ Court today. The incident occurred on 28 December 2022.

It’s understood officials were responding to a complaint of a potential business robbery at a liquor store, when the suspect at the time, Justin Zivengwa (33) apparently became aggressive when confronted and threatened the officers with a corkscrew.

Coetzee then allegedly shot Zivengwa repeatedly. During the probe, it was found that there was no business robbery and that the deceased was shot 6 times.

The docket was handed to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and the DPP instructed that Sergeant Coetzee must be charged for murder of Zivengwa.

The matter has been postponed to 14 March 2024, and the implicated sergeant has been released on R1000 bail.
