The City has invited members of the public to have their say on 142 proposed mobile business trading areas in Cape Town, which is set to increase the footprint of Food Trucks operating in this space.
The move comes after the adoption of the draft Mobile Business Policy coupled with proposed amendments to the related Informal Trading By-law.
The Metro is looking to issue permits for mobile businesses in a variety of areas, including parks, beaches, road reserves and nature reserves.
Some of the specific locations that have been earmarked are:
- Oudekraal Car Park
- Camps Bay Beach
- Signal Hill
- Rondebosch Common
- Locations along Victoria Road, including below the 12 Apostles Hotel
- Llandudno beach parking area
- Newlands Forest
- Simon’s Town Long beach
- Helderberg Nature Reserve
For the Rondebosch Common, a favourite spot among walkers, runners and cyclists, six mobile business permits have been proposed.
A full list of sites is available HERE.
The City says during the public participation process, interested stakeholders can view the 142 sites currently proposed, including proposals for the number of bays available per site, the locations, and the general terms and conditions when operating.
The MMC for Economic Growth James Vos says mobile businesses like food trucks, barber shops and clothing shops have become increasingly popular.
‘As such, the City wants to make it easier for businesses to operate in this sector. For this reason, the City set off on a journey to draft its first Mobile Business Policy. The policy was advertised and was open for public comment.’
Now that a policy has been drafted, the next steps include a by-law to activate mobile business permitting. Proposed mobile business trading areas are also needed for the mobile businesses to operate.
Interested parties have until 16 October 2024 to submit comments.
The City will also host a series of public meetings between 1 and 7 October 2024 to engage residents about the proposed mobile business trading areas:
Residents can submit their comments via one of the following channels:
- Online: Have Your Say page on www.capetown.gov.za or click HERE.
- Email: Mobile.BusinessPolicy@capetown.gov.za
- Deliver your comments by hand to your local subcouncil office
Once this process is completed, it will be tabled with the draft Mobile Business Policy and related Informal Trading By-law proposed amendments at the Portfolio Committee, Mayoral Committee meeting, and Council for consideration and approval.
