The DA said its National Day of Action against Eskom’s proposed 36% tariff hike has been successful.
The party took to the streets across all nine provinces to fight against what it calls an unjust electricity price increase for the next financial year, as DA MP Willie Aucamp explained:
“In a show of unity, DA supporters, leaders, and activists were present in all provinces making our opposition to these unjust visible and impactful. The DA has been fighting this battle on several fronts and today’s action is just the latest step. Tomorrow this fight moves to parliament where the DA has successfully secured an urgent debate on the proposed tariff increases,” said Aucamp.

However, the 021 Community Action Group’s Mark Schrikker claims the party’s protests are hypocritical in light of current tariffs. The lobby group represents thousands of residents in several areas across the Southern Suburbs and Cape Flats, where residents have accused the DA-owned City of Cape Town of exorbitant electricity fare increases following the installation of new power meters.

“They’re going on over an increase that must still happen when we’re telling them there’s already been an increase. We are already feeling the brunt and they are to blame for what is taking place. Now, they want the people to come and join them, while they are the implicators of the high tariffs that we have now. I don’t know who is lying to who,” said an aggrieved Schrikker.
