Calls for hiker safety following several mountain rescues

Published on

As we approach the warmer summer months, the Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) teams are renewing calls for outdoor enthusiasts to follow safety tips for hot-weather wilderness activities.

This request comes after rescue teams and volunteers from Wilderness Search And Rescue responded to the old Du Toitskloof Pass on Saturday afternoon, to assist the South African Police Service in their search for a missing hiker.

The lone 38-year-old hiker had been reported missing by family members earlier on Saturday.

After the hiker’s vehicle was traced to a point on the pass, the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS Drone Unit, together with members of K9 Search and Rescue Association of South Africa conducted a carefully coordinated search of the area.

According to WSAR spokesperson David Nel, the exhausted hiker was found shortly after 19h00 on Saturday evening. He was treated for heat-related injuries and assisted from the mountain to a waiting ambulance, before being driven to hospital.

In a separate incident on Thursday evening, WSAR volunteers and professionals, together with SANParks – Table Mountain National Park rangers, responded to Platteklip Gorge to assist an injured hiker.

According to Nel, the 24-year-old hiker and her friend were coming down the popular trail when she stepped awkwardly injuring her ankle. Unable to continue, she called the emergency number – 021 937 0300, shortly after 19h20.

“She was assessed and treated by a Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS paramedic before being helped into an improvised rope seat and carried down the trail on the backs of rescuers.”

Safety tips to follow when hiking

As more residents look to flock to the mountains this upcoming festive season, they are reminded to have a safety-conscious mindset when venturing into the outdoors.

The WSAR has urged hikers to follow these key points:

  • Start early and avoid any outdoor activity during the hottest hours of the day (12-3pm).
  • On warmer days, choose shaded hikes near water if possible.
  • Dress appropriately; wear light colour, loose-fitting, breathable, UPF-rated clothing.
  • Apply sunblock regularly and remember to wear a hat.
  • Carry at least 500ml of water for every hour you intend to be outdoors.

“Save the emergency contact number – 021 937 0300 and remember to call us sooner.”
