The two DHL Western Province teams set the bar high on the opening day of the U18 SA Rugby Craven Week. Representing the host ground for the week, both sides put in powerful performances to tee up an exciting week of Rugby.
The first day of the U18 Craven Week opened in Rondebosch, the first provincial schoolboy rugby event since 2019. The hunger was evident, with some teams being better prepared than others.
Most of the encounters on the first day ended in one-sided victories. In the most anticipated match of the day, the biggest margin of victory was achieved.
The DHL Western Province XV, or the WP “B-Team”, did not show mercy to their provincial compatriots, thumping Boland 65-7. The DHL WP XV proved that they are a force to be reckoned with despite being the second team at the event.
The main attraction of day one of the U18 SA Rugby Craven Week saw the DHL Western Province take on Border. On paper, another one-sided game of rugby. While the DHL Western Province took a 12-point lead in as many minutes and dominated at scrum time, they failed to pull away. The men from the Eastern Cape had opportunities to stay in the match, but let it slip with every opportunity.
It really is the best of the best who gathered in the South of Cape Town; potentially spectacular match-ups lie waiting for the rest of the week.
Results from day one:
Griquas 39-22 Eastern Province
Sharks 33-5 Valke
WP XV 65-7 Boland
WP 34-18 Border
