The Blitzboks are back in full training mode in Stellenbosch as they gear up for a challenging pool draw at the HSBC SVNS in Perth later this month. Head coach Philip Snyman expressed confidence in his squad while acknowledging the tough road ahead.

South Africa has been drawn into a demanding Pool A alongside reigning series champions Argentina, hosts Australia, and an in-form USA team. The tournament, scheduled for 24–26 January at HBF Park, will test the Blitzboks’ mettle as they aim to build on their recent success at the Cape Town Sevens.

Snyman emphasized the importance of staying grounded despite the triumph on home soil.

“The Cape Town win was incredible for us and the fans, but that’s behind us now,” Snyman said.

“The holidays are over, and the hard work has begun. Seeing the pool draw confirms the challenge ahead, but we’re already a week into preparations with our focus firmly on Perth.”

The coach noted that playing against Australia in front of their home crowd would add an extra layer of intensity, while the Blitzboks’ recent victory over Argentina provides a slight psychological edge. Snyman also acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by the USA, a consistently strong opponent.

As part of his long-term strategy, Snyman plans to integrate new talent into the squad while eyeing the next Olympic Games. However, injuries have slightly disrupted preparations, with stand-out Cape Town performer Tristan Leyds nursing a niggle. On a positive note, seasoned players Ryan Oosthuizen, Selvyn Davids, and Ronald Brown have returned to training after missing the Cape Town leg due to injuries.

“The return of experienced players adds depth to our selection process for Perth,” Snyman said. “We know what to expect from our opponents, and that will help us prepare mentally and tactically.”

The Blitzboks are set to leave for Perth on 19 January, aiming to maintain momentum and tackle one of the toughest pools in the tournament.

As the countdown begins, the Blitzboks’ determination and resilience will once again be tested on the international stage. Fans can only hope that the hard work in Stellenbosch will translate into success Down Under.
