Bailey’s Hi-5: 5 Feng-Shui Ways to Be More Productive at Your Desk

Published on

Feng shui is a Chinese practice. It’s the art of arranging buildings, objects, space and life to achieve harmony and balance.

Here are some ways to Feng Shui your office for optimum productivity:

  1. Ditch dried, dead, or fake plants, and go with succulents instead. In Feng Shui, dead, dried, and fake plants represent stagnancy. They block ideas from flowing freely. Succulents in Feng Shui are loved because they really absorb liquid, so they’re great representations of holding energy in. Plus they’re easy to take care of.
  2. Make sure all elements are represented. Those elements are wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.  Feng Shui is all about balancing these five energies from nature, so bring as many elements as you can, like a candle for fire (don’t be setting off your fire alarms though), have a glass of water on your desk, have a photo of nature – earth and have that in a metal frame. A wooden ornament completes your elements.
  3. Be intentional with your stack of books. They should speak to what you want to create and what your goals are for the coming year, in and out of the office.
  4. Treat your desk like a vision board. It pays off to take a future-thinking approach to your whole desk. Really assess what each item is telling you, and question whether it’s moving you toward where you want to go. An example that a Feng Shui expert shared was a client had an art print of a mountain facing her when she sat at her computer, which could be sending the message that there’s a mountain to climb at work every day. Replace those with positive mantras, or a photo that truly brings you joy.
  5. Clear the clutter on your desk and under your desk. Clutter blocks energy wanting to flow through, so do a clean up just before you leave, so that when you arrive each morning, you feel good about what you see.
