The project to ‘build’ the world’s biggest labyrinth, made entirely out of Spekboom, has begun. Hundreds of volunteers attended the first Volunteer Saturday in Stellenbosch last week, getting their hands dirty to plant over 164 000 spekboom plants. Known as the Great Labyrinth of Africa, it will have the same dimensions as the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
The Stellenbosch Bridge Smart City development, will host the Great Labyrinth of Africa, a global landmark that will serve as a living monument to environmental preservation on the planet.
The Project Director Peter Shrimpton, says the idea of creating a labyrinth came along when he made the connection between spekboom trees and the reduction of carbon dioxide.
“If we don’t regress carbon emissions by 2025, we’ll go past the tipping point and all of humanity will face extinction,” he said.
