A Cape Town restaurant owner is feeling very proud after winning the African Restaurant of the Year award.
The restaurant claimed the accolade at the recent 4th annual Luxe Restaurant Awards.
Emazulwini is a modern Zulu-inspired restaurant that seeks to celebrate Nguni cuisine and local ingredients.
The owner and chef, Mmabatho Molefe says, “We are just a small 10-seater space, and are still testing whether the idea works. Four people work at Emazulwini, with one person handling front of house and the other 3, in the kitchen.”
The restaurant recently launched its summer menu, which is dedicated to Molefe’s parents. “It is a 7-course set menu and starts with mielie breadsticks with sweetcorn dip and parsley mayo.
There are also dishes like vetkoek with homemade chicken polony, white cheddar catalan and corned beef tongue with tomato puree.
One of the interesting items on the menu is the chicken neck mousse tartlet and for dessert, there is fermented maize porridge on offer.
The restaurant is located at Makers Landing at the V&A Waterfront.
