Winde says the province has passed the peak of the fourth Covid-19 wave. Deaths, even at the peak, remained low and hospital capacity is good. Winde has called on the government to scrap the National State of Disaster and focus on creating jobs. Meanwhile, the national department of health’s dr Nicholas Crisp says the state of disaster cannot be lifted until the government has amended other legislation or regulations, to manage the Covid-19 pandemic. Experts say that although the fourth wave is less severe than previous ones, the possible appearance of other variants could pose major problems in future.
