The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority says the benefit of Covid-19 vaccines to society still far outweighs any potential risks. This as local health experts and government officials meet to get to the bottom of reports of extremely rare blood clots in America, following the administration of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. SAPHRA’s chairperson, professor Helen Rees says 6 reports of blood clots after over 6 million people in the US were inoculated, points to a very low risk.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma says the extension, which was to expire today, has been gazetted. The national state of disaster was declared on 15 March 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was originally set for three months, but regulations allow Dlamini-Zuma to extend it by notice in the Government Gazette monthly. She encouraged people to continue following non-pharmaceutical interventions, like wearing masks and social distancing.
